What are your top five MONSTER movies? Top 5 Pally monsters?

Unread post by Holister »

Ok, the title says it all. There are however some restrictions.....

1) no Vampires or werewolves...the first person to put "Twilight" is going to have a satellite dropped on their house.

2) No Zombies....this includes zombies of any type, speed, or origin. I hate zombies! :x

3) No Serial killers, slasher flicks, or torture porn. Humans can be monsters I know, but I am looking for straight up monsters.

4) No religious or psuedo-religious films either so the Omen, Exorcist, The Prophecy, etc. are also off the table.

I would also like to why you liked each.

I would also like to know what your top 5 Palladium monsters are, so you are not limited to just BtS, but can choose from any Palladium cannon material.

I will post my picks tomorrow. 8-) Hey, gotta keep you guys guessing.

This information will help with future table campaigns that I plan to run.

Extremely limiting (I mean, Zeds are monsters too).

Here goes:
1) Cthulhu
2) Godzilla
3) Frankenstein's Monster
4) The Thing
5) The Fly

Honorable mention: Deep Star Six

I don't have any favorite "pally" monsters, I steal monsters from movies or make up my own instead. It keeps the players on their toes more.

My favorite Palladium monsters are the sowki (echoes of Conan's enemy the Serpent Men or the Kinori), spider demons, and supernatural intelligences (since they can't manifest bodily in BTS).

Not Palladium, but I adore Dark*Matter's Bering demons. In that game, demons could briefly leave Hell only when summoned -- or they could slip out free and clear in the aftermath of a nuclear explosion. You didn't think we banned above-ground nuclear tests just because of some radiation, did you?

Sir Hollilot, why are your rules so restrictive? Consider that your rules remove all of the classic Universal Studios monsters from the black & white era except the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Dracula (vampire), the Mummy (zombie), Wolfman (werewolf), and Frankenstein's Monster (another zombie) are all disqualified. The more famous movie monsters which came later are overwhelmingly slashers like Freddy and Jason. Basically, all you left among very famous monsters are Godzilla (thanks for one, Beatmeclever), Jaws, and Jabba the Hutt. The last two are arguably not monsters at all but an animal and a character who happens to an alien. Then the removal of religious-themed movies cuts deep into the remaining scraps.

Here is my list of the left-overs in no particular order...
Gozer the Destroyer from Ghostbusters
Rancor from Return of the Jedi
Graboids from Tremors
Godzilla (Japanese version)
Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors (a.k.a. Audrey Jr in the 1960s version)

My list of Palladium monsters is actually a little easier to make. Here they are listed from least to most favorite.

5. Grave Ghoul -- an underused but fun, all purpose monster. They work as muscle minions, lone trouble-makers, and can even pass for humans if given a trench coat and hat. They can show up unexpectedly anywhere that you find old bodies from modern graveyards to ancient crypts, and they can move through dimensions without rifts, so they can also pop up at any time.

4. Haunting Entity -- the versatility of these critters is just about unparalleled. A Haunting Entity can remain mostly in energy form and mysterious for an experience like the movie Poltergeist. Or, it might latch onto the form of a Roman centurion and take the fight to you in a very physical way. Or, it might materialize as your late Grandma and actually believe itself to be her. The psionics package is not bad either and full of fun stuff like the ectoplasm power. The Dopplegangers of Nightbane are fun for similar reasons.

Honorable Mention: Doppleganger Entity from BtS Boxed Nightmares -- my list was feeling a little heavy on the entities, and this critter is somewhat similar to the Haunting Entity, so I cut it from the list. It is worth mentioning because it works like a god among Haunting Entities. Not only does it perfectly copy a dead target, but it creates a huge false environment around itself to match its new appearance. It's a great excuse for dropping player characters into all sorts of other settings and genres for their stories. Hmm, a Doppleganger Entity copying a pirate from the Golden Age of Sail...

3. Madness Ghost from Rifts: Madhaven -- these entities have some psionics like most, but they also can cast magic spells, offering a much broader range of abilities. Also, it can degrade the sanity of other characters just by being nearby. Come on, giving insanities is fun.

2. Gremlins -- these guys are just fun to have around. Unlike most monsters, they utilize technology extensively. Put the PCs on a slow moving tanker in the Bermuda Triangle, and let a single Gremlin loose in the cargo hold.

1. Soul Tree from The Rifter (in a BtS article by the same name, I think Issue #13) -- This is just a wicked-cool concept. It's an undead tree which takes root in graveyards, barters for souls, and generates its own entity minions. It can be an excellent setting piece (which is how I used it in Court of Tarot), or the boss in a high level game for powerful characters to fight.

Other critters who almost made the list were Mr. Loucifer's Mimic Zombies and Scaring Crows, and Krate's Gluttony Ghoul. The Mimic Zombies for Dead Reign might be fun, but I don't care for DR's ultra-rules-heavy take on zombies. The Scaring Crows are wonderfully different, but they are a little tricky to work into a campaign. The Gluttony Ghoul has several nifty aspects like how it begins its life cycle as a larva infesting inside a human, but it is also a little tricky to work into a game.

In no real order.

1: Those things from Pitch Black that just sweep in and kill you through echo-location, but can't stand sunlight. There's a lot of them and they are quite fast.

2: The Velociraptor form Jurassic Park. 6ft tall, 3" claws, and it opened doors.

3: The Xenomorph. Alien 1 was a scary movie thanks to that thing.

4: The Fly - the original story was creepy.

5: The Navajo Skinwalker. Something about a witch who anders around wearing animal pelts to turn into things and curses people spooks me. I'm not sure why. Oh yeah, and they can only be shot by bullets dipped in ashes.

Now, Palladium things.

1: The Living Nightmare/Morpheomorph from NB: Between The Shadows. Basically someone's dream persona run amok, that can possibly kill you.

2: The Deathweaver, 'cause spiders creep me out and those things are smart.

3: The Boogeyman, because its big, scary, but prays on the weak - ie, children.

4: The Hoarse Whisperer, because it's so damn devious.

5: The Nightwind from Chaos Earth: Creatures of Chaos. Not only is it a seductress, but it can be a creepy stalker seductress.

Wanderer, idolater, worshiper of fire,
Come even though you have broken your vows a thousand times,

Ok; My Top 5 Palladium Monsters -

1) Gargoyles: They are big, mean, cunning, can fly, and are very tough. Heck they are the primary antagonist in Rifts world books. If I ever have a "power player" a gargoyle often does the trick of whittling them down to size.

2) Mindolar: Got to respect a monster that can make mind slaves out of its victims and use them against you.

3) Narcarant: Basically you are fighting The Blob and you don't see many of these things used in games all too often.

4) The Bugs (from System Failure): Its like a combination of Aliens and Them! You kill one and dozens more can take its place. They are hive minded and can really screw with players who are heavy on the technology.

5) The Splurgoth: Very Chuthulian, that alone makes them creepy and their power makes them excellent "alien" invaders for higher level campaigns.

Top 10 Movie Monsters:

1) Gojira (AKA: Godzilla; 1954): He is, and always will be "King of The Monsters".

2) Jaws (1975): I still won't swim in the ocean (or lakes, ponds, and pools for that matter).

3) The Jersey Devil (from 13th Child; 2002): The best depiction of the Jersey Devil legend ever!

4) The Blob (1958): It creeps, it crawls, it slides under doors. It was a jello mold that almost ate a whole town.

5) The Triffids (Day of The Triffids 1963): In a world where most of the population has gone blind, giant walking carnivous plants that spew acid; awesome!

6) The Kothoga (The Relic 1997): Monster stalks victims in a museum to munch on their hypothalimus.

7) Sharktopus (2010): Its part shark, part octopus; nuff' said.

8) Camel Spiders (2012): These things in real life have the US military in the middle east freaked out.

9) The Bird (The Giant Claw): Its like fighting a giant flying battleship. :P

10) The Lepus (Night of The Lepus): "There's a herd of giant killer rabbits coming this way."

PS: I know my monsters... :bandit: I do have a 200+ DVD collection afterall. 8-)

Sorry to burst your bubble there Lord Z. But your are incorrect on a few counts.

1) Frankenstein's Monster (AKA: The Creature) was more akin to the Golem legend as an animiated creation.

2) The Mummy falls under the Undead category but more to their category of Ancient Dead. Aninmated Mummies as opposed to Mummy immortalus are more akin to vodoo zombies are the zombies based on the spell Create Zombie.

3) The cinamtic deffination of the term "monster" covers a wide range of possibilities.

For example you have Kaiju (giant monsters like Godzilla, Gamera, Mothra, etc.).

Pusedo-Kaiju (like the Morwen from Outlander, Graboids, Garuda, the Kothoga from the Relic, Propechy (1979), etc.

Giants {giant animals or humanoids as the result of mutation, experiements gone wild, freaks of nature} (like the ants from Them, the spider from tarantula, the alligator from Alligator, the snake from Anaconda, Jaws, Giant Spider Invasion, etc.).

Creature Features (Creature from The Black Lagoon, She Creature, Alien, Peter Benchley's Creature, Jersey Devil (13th Child or Carny), CHUD, etc.)

Killer Plants (Day of the triffids, The Ruins, Mantango, The Navy Vs The Night Monsters, etc.).

Creepy Crawlers (Parasite, Larva, Skeeter, Ticks, Attack of The Giant Leeches, etc.).

Amorphous Horrors (The Blob both 1958 & 1988, The Green Slime, The Stuff, X the Unknown, etc.).

These are just some of the examples and they are hardly what one may consider "scraps". I an advid fan of the Monster genere and personally own well over 200 monster movies on DVD and there is not one vampire, werewolf, demon, slasher, mummy, or zombie in the lot.

The point of this Q&A is to encourage scenarios and ideas that reach beyond the "usual suspects". :D

In my defense, behind their design, I wrote them to NOT be a part of a campaign outright. The come, they take, and they leave... no need for a campaign behind them. ;)

They are nuisances for when things get quiet or toy need to change the game up a bit, especially after one of the P.C.'s has been attacked by them before and now has a phobia of them. If the group ever decides to do something about these supernatural pests, then THAT becomes your campaign angle. If not, they stay occasional nuisances to catch he players off guard with occasionally.

Sorry, I know this isn't the topic here, so I'll get off my soapbox now. :)

Since Mr. Loucifer has gotten off the soapbox, I will step right up there myself. My bubble is not going down without a fight.

Hollister, if we limit our definition of 'zombie' to just monsters created specifically from the Create Zombie spell, then the Mummy and Frankenstein's monster do not count. However, that strict definition would also eliminate the super-zombies from Rifts Africa, all of the zombies from Dead Reign RPG, all of the zombies from the Resident Evil video games, and the majority of zombies from zombie movies. I opt to simply define 'zombie' as a dead guy who is still walking or crawling around. This definition is supported by your instructions which read, 'No Zombies....this includes zombies of any type, speed, or origin. I hate zombies!' So both the Mummy and Frankenstein's monster meet the definition regardless of mythical origins behind either story.

On the other hand, I do accept your answer about the point of the Q&A. I also complement you for starting an excellent thread.

The Blob is another great suggestion. That reminded me of Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors (or Audrey Jr in the black & white version). I have edited my previous list, dropping the Xenomorph and replacing it with Audrey II.

Honestly, I like have never read a Rifter a day in my life. :D

I bought one like years ago to see what it was all about. Never bought one again since. Think it was the swimsuit issue.

Anyway as for more Pally monsters I have grown to adore:

1) The Burrower from BtS.

2) The Hollowmen from Nightbane

3) The Hydra from PFRPG

4) The Death Weaver from BtS.

5) Giant Squid from M&A.

Why thank you. I do try to help get the old gaming juices flowing every now and then.

Lord Z wrote:The Blob is another great suggestion. That reminded me of Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors (or Audrey Jr in the black & white version). I have edited my previous list, dropping the Xenomorph and replacing it with Audrey II.

Audrey from Little Shop of Horros is a great example of vegetation being the antagonist. The first I believe. As for The Blob; that thing has always creeped me out ever since I was a kid. Though I did not care for the sequel "Beware! The Blob" {1972}, I thought that the 1988 remake was quite good.

Another good one was "Abominable {2006}". Best sasquatch/bigfoot/yeti movie I have seen. The film "Snowbeast" {1977} is in my opionion second best. Again, these are monsters that you do not see used too often and would be great for wilderness style campaigns.

You guys remember "Phantasm" ? I love those killer metal balls {Sentinels}. I use those brain sucking death spheres all the time. Whenever I run a game and a character hears a faint HUM from around the corner, they run away in stark terror.

Hum? This gives me an idea for another thread?

1. Xenomorph...scared the crap out of me when I first saw the first Alien (I was 10) Nightmares galore. Cold, cruel, alien terror...chrome teeth blasting you in the face...if you're lucky you die...if not you are going to be a mommy in the worst kinda way.

2. Gargoyles...especially the ones from the 1972 TV movie...again...nightmares galore. To be swooped down upon by an unseen assailant, viciously clawed, flown high into the air, only to be dashed upon sharp rocks...ouch, ouch, scream!!

3. Shoggoth....HP Lovecrafts protean nightmare creatures and possible progenitors of earthly life. The Blob can also be squeezed into this category as well. Having your organs burst and bones shattered, followed by cellular absorbsion not the most pleasant way to go.

4. Killer Dolls...be it Chucky, the Zuni fetish, the Puppetmaster series killer puppets or Stuart Gordon's Dolls all them are creepy. To be pulled down by tiny assailants only to be swarmed and wounded by a myriad of rabid little attacks, not good. Kinda like one of those 'helpless, can't getaway' dreams.

5. Invisible Stalker...be it the 'wooorh'-ing unseen force from the Evil Dead series, the demon rapists from The Entity or any other kind of totally invisible assailant. Ghost, demon or otherwise...that what kicks your arse invisibly is pretty horrific.

The first Jeepers Creepers was good (though I have friends that disagree with me). I just couldn't get behind the sequel. I just think that they tried to hard to soon. They should have stuck to the same premise as the first movie of a monster desperatly trying to impersonate a man. The second film was more of a "body count" movie in my opinion.

Another good movie I saw recently was;

Holister, The Scaring Crow is a little difficult to define without going into details. I would call it a demonic entity which manifests as a murder of crows. Does that seem right?

I just watched THE THING {from Another World} again for the first time in like awhile. I forgot how great a movie that one is. Even though the two remakes that have follwed [actually one remake and a remake of the remake :-?] I still prefer the old black & white classic original the best. :-D

Believe it or not, I prefer a good plot or story where I can associate with the characters. Special effects are good, but not the most important of the movie to me. I suppose that is why I don't like slasher flicks, zombie flicks, and "torture porn" films like Saw or Hostel {I only got 20 minutes into Human Centipede before I had to turn it off}.

I also like a vampire or werewolf movies too, but as long as they are good. Liek for instance the original Howling was the absolute werewolf movie ever!!! Best vampire movie I ever saw was Francis Ford Copola's Dracula. I enjoy those films that stay in touch with the genere (and at times sub-genre's) roots. Some films that stray too far off kilter for my taste just get bad reviews from me.

I suppose that is why I enjoy the moster {of Kaiju} genre as much as I do. Even the hokey or campy ones are still fun to watch. :D

Say Holister, I just noticed that The Ring was missing from your list. Did you not consider these (the Japanese or American versions) to be a monster movies? I would think that they were. The monster is mediocre, but I thought that the directing and acting was top notch stuff.

The Ring was a great movie. The original japanese "Ringu" was better. But I do not consider "ghost stories" in the same category as monsters. Ghosts are a deffinitive "supernatural" type movie. However there are many great ghost story type movies. Many come from Japan and southeast Asia (South Korea & Tiwan).
