Even with auto-dodge, the character still has to know an attack is coming in order to dodge. There are a few exceptions to this (ie: juicers).

Yeah, there's still a common-sense element to it. The character should know the attack is coming in order to auto-dodge it.
That said, let's say the guy's in a sword fight vs. 2 opponents, and you can imagine a swift, dynamic fight where one of the opponents momentarily slides in behind the character. I would allow the character to dodge because he knows an attack is coming; plus, in the cinematic view that the fluid fight has characters moving their feet quite a bit, I don't see it as a problem. But this is quite a different scenario than being ambushed from behind by ranged weapons....
