Tilt roll to negate a critical hit?

Whether it is a Veritech or a Valkyrie, Robotech or Macross II, Earth is in danger eitherway. Grab your mecha and fight the good fight.

Tilt roll to negate a critical hit?

Unread post by socom242 »

Greetings all!!!

OK...long story short

I dusted off my old INVID INVASION RPG book, went to a friend's place, made them roll up OCC's and dumped buckets of Invid on them :D

Then I scored a critical hit on one of the pilots.

He opted to make a Tilt Dodge roll (-12% on his skill) to avoid the hit.

This smelt of rancid cheeze!!!

1) I opted against it simply for the fact that it seemed a bogus way of negating a critical hit.

2) On the same topic, don't you have to be engaged in "dog fighting" maneuvers to utilize the special Pilot: Jet/Veritech modifiers listed under the skill description?

In the end, I ruled that only another natural 20 on a defense roll can negate a critical 20 roll. You cannot substitute a skill roll to do it.

I'm wondering if anyone else (more than likely) has encountered this and what they've done. OR perhaps the Palladium Rules Overlords have already answered this topic on another thread.

I'll be checking back for any replies. Thank you all!!!

if the rules say it negates the hit, i guess it will.
Palladiums combat system is based around hand-to-hand and melee... and transalates poorly into other forms, unless heavily house ruled.

Ive always said the piloting rolls come before the attack and damage roles.

which may explain why dogfights tend to end in massive missle volleys

Seriously often its

My guys came up with a list that tells them how many of each each missle warhead yeild it would take to kill any mech and its pilot in body armor on an average roll, assuming a 15th level pilot with full armor and all physical training skills with perfect 6s on each roll.

they always try to fire off exactly that many rounds unless its an invid invasion type game where they have to save ammo THEN its ok to fire one less missle than that.

That is pretty good. So you have at least one mathematician in your group too. I know I have one. LOL  :D

That can be a huge pain in the posterior when you do have one of those people in your group. The variables you sughgested makes a lot sense. I've done that once in awhile to throw a wild card into the mix. :D
