Wolfen Mounts

Unread post by Shades of Eternity »

was brainstorming with a buddy of mine trying to figure out suitable mounts for wolfen, based on climate and size

we came up with the following possibilities
Arrowhead
Mastodon
Elk
and

Moose.
- This last one was decided for several reasons
1. The Russians have domesticated them in the real world
2. Strong enough to hold weight of wolfen
3. Obstinate, but smart enough to teach tricks
4. Naturally doubles back, to watch over own trail.
5. Aquatic enough to travel across passes with comparative ease.
6. Prehensile nose for picking up stuff when trained to do so.

Biggest problem I foresea is getting food, but with the right spells, shouldn't be too serious problem.

Any other ideas with finding a suitable mount for a Wolfen

The shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep's for which the sheep thanks the shepherd as his liberator, while the wolf denounces him for the same act as the destroyer of liberty. Plainly, the sheep and the wolf are not agreed upon a definition of liberty.

 funny

Honestly, I don't think that Wolven ride any mounts.....in their army the calvery division is made up of Humans from the capital of the Wolven..at least according to the Adventures in the Northern Wilderness.

It being a racial slur, didn't even cross my mind, seeing as I am of Russian heritage ;)

generally,
i strikes me that no horse or domesticated creature would allow wolfen to ride them...

and averaging, what 9-12 feet tall, there's not alot that would be practical to ride...

in heavilly forrested areas, being taller makes it harder to travel, not easier...

so i've always run it that wolfen focus on having Running and Forced March, not riding skills...

Now that I think about it, I never met a Wolfen with a horsemanship skill or a mount, maybe Exotic (now that we seem to have agreed to switch to second edition :()

In my own campaign, the few Wolfen officers and scouts who ride horses find themselves on the backs of Clydesdales, if anything. A division of Knight Errants, outside the chain of command of the Imperial Army (basically any Wolfen Knight) gets an Oborus (I think that's the spelling; those souped-up reindeer from Northern Hinterlands).

But given its use as a war mount, I like the idea of an Arrowhead! I'll be sure to remember that one. :-D

Hence the need for Simvan training.

Specially bred mounts. I was inspired looking at the Death Dealer by Frank Frazzetta.

in heavilly forrested areas, being taller makes it harder to travel, not easier...

Definitely. Cavalry wouldn't be useful in the forest: but, there are other terraisn were they come in useful.

so i've always run it that wolfen focus on having Running and Forced March, not riding skills...

For woodland campaigns, I do the same.

This is one of the places we (being an entirely Wolfen group) go outside of what the books have. In our campaign, the Wolfen do have a special breed of enormous horse they can use. There aren't huge numbers of them, and they aren't as fast and agile as a normal sized war horse, but they do the trick. There are, as suggested above, many times when it's more practical for us to be on foot anyway though. Also, none of us are especially tall for Wolfen (I don't think any of us are over 10 feet, having been created under first edition).

well if there is a wooly rhino in the palladium world, that could be very useful as a mount, if trained properly.

especially in siege warfare :demon:

Personally I like the thought of a race who doesn't really use mounts. It gives there whole society a different feel, yet doesn't diverge radically.

That said, I do like the "if we got them, we have moose" idea a lot.

I still like the idea of Wolfen riding into battle on the shoulders of a lobotomised Minotaur. Especially considering the bad press that the minotaur race has, it wouldn't be viewed as something bad. Hell, the Wolfen would become less reviled I think if they were shown to actively hunt down the feared minotaur race. They might even become popular were they to decorate their houses with the skulls of Changelings. :D

I've gotta doubt the Wolfen would be riding Minotaurs and hack apart Changelings. However, that doesn't seem above the Western Empire...

Um..

Wolfen don't have backwards Knees.

they walk on their toes.

that reverse joint is their ankle.

Either way, I'm sure a saddle could be constructed to suit them.
I don't see all Wolfen as riders, and of those that do, most will be passable at best.
I like the idea of chariots for Wolfen, although this does limit their terrain somewhat.
Nomadic Desert Wolfen could ride Simvan trained camels...

I"m going with the idea of a Wooly Rhino, Mammoth or one of the heartier Mastadon species.

Simvan in the Palladium World?

If I can have Wolfen in Rifts, why couldn't I have Simvan in PFRPG?
But, yes, I use Simvan as trainers and handlers for various mounts and beasts and monsters of burden.

I just really liked them.

wolfen "calvalry" could simply be large chariots/war-wagons pulled by teams of wolfen, like a dog sled...

Moose wouldn't be a bad idea. Maybe base them on the Obaru from the Northern Hinterlands books. I've been wanting a giant riding elk ever since I saw Princess Mononoke.

Prince Ashitaka was the coolest anime hero I've seen in a while. Tough, strong, yet with wisdom that far exceeded even that of the animal gods.

Not to mention he could amputate people's arms with his bow. FREAKIN' AWESOME!!!
