"Dimensional Shield" Spell?

Unread post by MidnightNova »

In one book (Likely a Rifter?) there was a spell listed that would prevent dimensional travel and possibly teleportation within it's area of effect. This spell was mentioned as being encoded into Eye of Eylor obelisks (5 of the large Eyes stacked one atop each other in individual containment units) as part of the defense system of Splynn.

Does anyone recall where this spell was found?

I don't remember which Rifter mentions this about Eyelor but if you're looking for a canon spell along these lines, there's a 12th level spell in Library of Bletherad (page 87) called Dimensional Barrier which has this effect.

Splugorth likely have the resource to keep casting this indefinitely as needed, or just permanence-ward it by using Demon Bones and Diabolists.

Also RUE pg 121 has a "Combat Note" for the new **** ability Dimension Sense which allows them to spend PPE to redirect dimensional magic, so they could be doing that as well.

It only costs 1 melee action per round to be monitoring passively for this stuff so they could have a highlord on duty for this in critical areas.

I'm a little unclear on the RANGE though...

They could link the spell with Rune Statues and Eylor observation eyes. The statues and Eyes act as the scanning system for detecting dimensional incursions.

I found it! It's in Rifter 15, Page 101. Also called Dimensional Barrier. But it's a 15th level spell. 2,000 (!) PPE, 12 hours/level duration, 100' radius per caster level-but oddly the height is cut off at 50'.

The 5 Eye thing is apparently you need 5 synchronized eyes to hold just this one spell, which makes some sense considering it's 15th level.

I could see both forms of the spell existing honestly. This being a Splugorthian special.

The 50ft height cap seems like a big problem for open areas but it's probably fine indoors where you can just cast it on every floor of your pyramid, 12x the duration for 13x the PPE is pretty fair...

If we assume high level casters are doing this, like say 10th, getting 1,000 ft radius is better than 750ft (250+500)

The big downside to this long-lasting non-canon version from Alex Miller's SpecializeD Shifters in 2001 (as compared to the canon version from Bill Coffin in 2000) is how it's possible to poke holes in it (allowing a savings throw) by overlapping a 2nd Dimensional Barrier.

Meaning all you'd really need to do is cast your own version (albeit tricky, can you store a 2,000 PPE spell in a scroll for such an occasion) and then save vs magic.

The upside to this though - there are ways to automatically save vs magic (Ensorcel the caster) meaning Splugorth could be immune to their own dimensional restrictions if we just assume every Splugorth AI has permantently ensorcelled every high lord who works for him.

Permanently ensorcelling supernatural creatures is tricky though since you can't use permanence wards - you'd have to use demon magic for that. I don't think the Splugorth know that directly but they probably do have the connections to pull it off, and it would explain why they keep so many slaves for food - they need to harvest the souls anyway, might as well use the meat.
