The Spell Summon and Control Rodents (Ritual)

Unread post by darthauthor »

The Spell Summon and Control Rodents (Ritual)
page 220 of Rifts Ulitmate Edition.

So what can you do with an "army" of a 100 rats?

They do S.D.C. damage!
So an CS grunt is sealed in EBA, can't he just step on them?

What is the point of this spell?
To scare women who are afraid of mice?

It costs 70 P.P.E.
IS it just for a distration?
Do they devour crops?
Spread Disease?
Horror Factor?

What is the big reward of casting this spell?

I'm having a hard time seeing past adventurers stomping on the mice/rats, with the rats S.D.C. bite against thier MD armor.

While they don't make much sense being used to attack foes with MD protection (armor or natural) there are several things to consider:
1. they can still be used when they are WITHOUT MD protection, characters shouldn't live in their MD armor (obviously if they MD beings or FCB that's not going to apply), so the party is vulnerable at those times
2. PPE source. While not part of RUE (at a glance), present in RMB (and PF2E) in (of all places the psychic section) is a list of the PPE (average of 2.5/5 for m/r) and HP of various animals. At 30 per level you'd be looking at 75PPE for Mice or 150PPE for Rats. So if you summon a large number of them, at 2nd level you would (regardless should) get a NET Profit of PPE for a sacrifice or draining.
3. Potential Food Source.
4. while the spell only considers SDC mice/rats for stats, you could introduce MD versions (mutants, genetic experiments, alien rodents, etc) that are vulnerable to the spell. The spell does say rodents per level, but there are OTHER TYPES of rodents one could include because of this that would be subject to the magic that aren't mice/rats (like bats)
5. Pest Control (source of income). A place has a problem with mice/rats, the mage comes in and "gathers" them up and "takes care of them however they want" (kill or capture).
6. the mice/rats if they can get in position could in theory steal gear from a MD opponent (not likely something they are holding, but wouldn't it suck if those mice that fell from the ceiling onto the CS Deadboys "accidently" took their grenade pins. Or hit "quick releases" dropping gear or exposing themselves).
7. not likely practical due to duration generally (high level or close range more likely), you could cast buff spell(s) on to a rodent to make it more dangerous (how about casting GIANT or SUPERHUMAN STRENGTH as examples)
