You have to set it up,so people still have a chance against the Zombies.

If done during the civil war times, population density would be a lot lower. Also people wouldnt know about zombies so there wouldnt be an 'omg it zombies' effect. They would use fire and pitchforks a lot.

Another advantage would be the low technology. There is less tech to LOSE. Most of your population is rural back then, so losing the cities wont hurt as much, when everyone and their dog is already used to growing their own food, and canning it for the winter.....

Exactly. A zombie outbreak in the past, for the most part, would be just a side story for a group.

It would STILL be huge, and if it was 'cinimaticly wide spread' it could easily wipe out all the cities. Though with out mass transport you cant have a 'patient zero' though narativium always comes through if needed. And it would profoundly alter civlilzation (or what ever was left of it). Cities would never be looked at the same for instance.

An effective method would be to isolate the event to one local, say like London. Then you tie it to some big event (like maybe the Great Fire) so that at the end of it, the players are going "huh????????".
Another thing to think about, change the rules slightly so that the "infection" is caused by a bite, make it take a couple of months to manifest and it can spread on ships.
Another possibility, zombie rises three days out on ship, turns all of the crew and passengers to zombies, "ghost ship" glides into destination port and all zombies jump ship. Maybe there is a thinker on board that steers it roughly to where they want to go.
The possibilities are endless, it is just up to the GM to develop them.

If I did a historical game the outbreak would be confined to a specific location. With some limiter on the characters simply running for their lives (like its an island and the zombies arrived in the only port first or something).
I'd also make it possible for the characters to destroy the infestation, but they have to act fast before the numbers of zombies get so high that its impossible.
Another idea might be a world in which the Black Death was really a zombie plague.

There are tons of historic eras where there are "ghost stories" that you could drop zombies into the mix and watch the players all run around not knowing which way is up.

in 1944,Nazi use ther only Experimental Gas weapon on the Red Army,100s die,with a hour the rise as a Zombie and attack both sides.

Been fighting a sinus infection, so have not done much. The basic idea is during the Battle of the Bulge the Thule Society uses a spell they discovered to raise the dead as an army to fight the Allies. The problem not knowing what they were doing they messed up the spell big time. The Zombies are not under their control and instead of every corpse in 5 mile radius raised it was 50 miles. The first game will be more of a test to see if they like the idea and then go from there.

I love the idea of re-interpreting real historical events to explain in-game events. The great fire would be a great solution by a party to kill the zombie plague or could easily be a consequence of some action by the party, like forgetting some incendiary somewhere. Voila, a new reason why an event occured in history.

Thanks Hendrik. It has been an idea of mine for years in regards to various genres when running at some point in history. I figure why should the GM need to come up with something unique in history when there are plenty of great facts that can be twisted to suit the game.

I know, right!?!
History is such a rich treasure chest for adventures which is why I play BtS only in historical settings (1930s hardboiled, WWII, and I have loads of ideas for other history adventures). Alas, my games are in hiatus atm because of work and studies *sob*
It is so much fun twisting and reinterpreting historical facts. I tend to think it makes things more memorable for players, especially when they know the facts/outcomes and see what their role is/was in that. (without railroading, of course)

I just finally started getting better, hopefully can get something started soon. I only have two players available, so trying to figure out how to work it with that.

I just finally started getting better, hopefully can get something started soon. I only have two players available, so trying to figure out how to work it with that.
I hope you fully kick the illness. Being sick for a month sucks, it happens to me every winter.
With only two players, I would try running two or three NPC's (probably lower rank and level squad members) that always wait to see what the players want to do before acting. That way you are not too tempted to use the NPC's to give them too many hints. On the flip side, you could try having the players be the only surviving members of the squad and behind enemy lines with no chance of reinforcements.

Any number of arcane/occult causes could be employed by the Nazis to purposely or inadvertently cause a zombie outbreak. Hitler was obsessed with the occult, and popular media has already touched on this, most notably the Indiana Jones movies, and most recently Captain America. That's one way I would initiate a campaign. Another would be a crashed Foo Fighter, collected and brought back to England for study. When the craft is opened, either an innocuous pathogen for the alien race, or a booby trap, kills all in proximity, and brings them back as zombies.
They make a wondrous mess of things. Brave amateurs, they do their part.
