Shields

Unread post by ghost2020 »

Ok, so how do you use shields in your game?

DO you ask the player to choose between parry bonus for sword or shield per attack?
Do you combine them?

What are the "official" rules for how shields work in combat, how their bonuses work, etc.

I grant the larger bonus (almost always shield) for parrying and they the added bonus of attempting to parry ranged attacks, even if I consider them idiots for not just getting out of the way.
What a cruel thing is war: to separate and destroy families and friends, and mar the purest joys and happiness God has granted us in this world; to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors, and to devastate the fair face of this beautiful world. - R E Lee

hey :)

using a shield to parry is simple, it works exactly the same as any other hth weapon. the character uses whatever PP bonus, hand-to-hand bunuses and WP bonuses he can scrape together and uses those bonuses to parry.
example; rambo has PP: 19 (+2 to strike, parry and dodge), he has boxing (+2 to parry and dodge), has martial arts at third level (+2 to strike, +3 to parry and dodge. he also has WP Shield at 3rd level proficiency (+2 to parry). rambo would be +9 to parry with the shield, simple...
a shield is effectively a weapon just like a sword, but it has limited offensive capabilities, it can be used to smash someone or it can be thrown. rambo would be +4 to strike with the shield.

if the character has a sword in the other hand and he uses that weapon to attack with or parry with, add the bonuses together in a similar fashion as above but instead of using the bonuses provided by WP Shield, use the ones from WP Sword when using a sword :)

hi again :)

sorry about the double post above

Zazshan, pick up ur main rules book and read the section on combat moves. read paired weapons and simultaneous attack and you should realize how a "riposte" move is done with paired weapons. effectively parry with the shield and then attack with the sword :)

One houserule that we have in our games is that you can use a decent sized shield as cover for your main body, making enemies require a called shot to hit you.
