VF-1A JOTUN Armour Package

Unread post by RobotechMaster »

The VF Jotun Armour:

DESCRIPTION:

After the success of the Super Valkyrie was apparent, interest was renewed to continue developing an Armored Valkyrie. The Jotun Armored Upgrade fuses the best of the Armored and Super Valkyrie Upgrades. While the Valkyrie is restricted to battloid mode, it utilizes a high-powered directional booster, increasing its speed. It also is fitted with vernier thrusters on the legs. For armaments, it is equipped with a GU-11 cannon and also holds a heavy Tactical Shield.*

A Valkyrie is enhanced with the JBP-2R Modular Armor & MVAS-2 FASTPack known as Jotun Armored Valkyrie. This armored weapon system gives the Valkyrie better protection than the Armored Valkyrie plus half the missile payload of the Super Valkyrie's FASTpack, making it a formidable adversary in the field of battle. It is often deployed in a "mecha buster" capacity, a task aided by a handheld shield to deflect shrapnel and enemy gunfire, as well as absorb missile strikes. Mounted on the shield is the standard GU-11 Gun Pod. When the armor becomes too mangled in combat and the FASTPack missiles are spent, theJotun Armor can be jettisoned, giving the Valkyrie underneath the freedom to transform and use other modes. The Jotun Armor is an experimental weapon and armor package deployed for special operations and defense of strategic positions.**

personally i like to think the Jotun armor set was a development aboard the SDF-1.. leveraging the FAST pack components to create a version of the armor pack system that could be more produced aboard to replace their dwindling supply of the standard armor packs. that it was more adapted to space operations was a bonus. this explains why we first see it during the battle with dolza's fleet.

though i disagree with the "better protection than the armored VF" line.. the armored VF modules cover more of the mecha's frame, which means that even if the older system was using less advanced armor materials, its protection is going to be higher. the only place i could see the Jotun system providing better protection is the torso module, were it seems to be similar in bulk and coverage, but forgoes the missile pods for a simple curved armor panel. so i can buy that being better at stopping enemy fire. but the arms and legs are less protected.. the armored VF had actual armor packages over the entire thing (forearms, shoulders upper and lower legs) while the Jotun literally just has the fast pack forearm packs and the leg fuel tanks. which don;t provide much coverage overall, and aren't particularly well armored for the bits they do cover.

thus the jotun really should provide less protection.. it just lets the VF be a lot more mobile as the trade off, since it isn't being weighed down by all that heavy armor plating and missile packs systems. the higher mobility is the main key really, since the VF's mobility (even just in battloid mode) is what lets it survive agaisnt swarms of battlepods.
