Inconsistency: Range of the 'Control the Beast' Spell

Unread post by Hotrod »

"Range: 100 ft (30.5 m)"

Description: "...within his line of vision, up to 60 feet (18.3 m) away."

Which is it?

I'd play it that you can cast it on them from 100ft away, but lose control at 60ft, and the spell dissipates if they get more than 100ft away. So if they get more than 60ft away the beasts will stop being controlled but can be controlled again if brought back within 60ft, but if they get beyond 100ft the spell ends and needs to be cast again.

But honestly I think that its a copy paste error and they tried to increase the range to 100ft, whilst reducing the number of creatures you control (1d6 per level down to 2 per level)

Greetings and Salutations. I agree with kiralon, that this appears to be the intent of a change with bad editing.

First/Revised Edition PF had Range 60 ft, and then the "within his line of vision up to 60 feet (18.3 m) away." The only difference between the two here is an added comma. A lot of the other wording is also very similar. This is also seen in some versions of Carpet of Adhesion, with the Range listing one thing but the description having old, left over copy & paste text from 1st Edition*. The alternate (though I'm doubtful) is that the "Range" listed is a bad copy and paste and the range was meant to be left at 60 ft. However, I'm personally inclined to believe the former, and PF was the only setting I could find that spell listed (didn't see it in Rifts or Nightbane, and HU2 has the same wording as PF2). I don't believe Palladium has ever given an official answer on the matter. Hope that helps. Farewell and safe journeys.

*The answer to the Carpet of Adhesion discrepancy can be more clearly determined because in PF and HU the old text is removed, but remains in Rifts (for example).

I'll go with 100 ft then. It seems like that was their intent with the revision, and the 60 feet was an oversight.
