Rune Items and Doppelgängers/Manifestations

Unread post by MarissaLH2112 »

Rune Items bond to their owner. The Doppelgänger spell and Manifestation Prototypical Deific Ability (as well as the Multiple Selves super power and likely several other things I’m not thinking of) makes a copy of the owner. A lesser copy, to be sure, but the spells and abilities all play up how exact the copy is. So could the original pass around any rune items they might possess and share control of the item?

Example. Thoth creates two Manifestations and a Doppelgänger. He gives each of them a rune item that he’s bonded to. Do the items work for them as they would for him?

What about a mortal wizard who casts Doppelgänger? Could the copy wield a bonded rune item like the original?

and a follow up question could be

Excellent question! I’d say yes, if only due to psychic backlash. If the item can be recovered by the original, it might rebond in an unusually short amount of time if it liked the owner, or refuse to bond again at all if it did not.

Kind of like with twins or a real clone. They are unique individual person so only the single person would be bonded with the rune weapon. Just because they are genetically the same doesn't matter. The bonding is a more spiritual metaphysical thing.

Death normally severs the link. So a doppelganger would be able to bond just like anyone else.

I usually have folks that are resurrected that were bonded with a rune weapon able to do so again immediately, unless it found a new owner because resurrecting happened months or years later.

In the case of Manifestation, it’s described as a splintered consciousness, with the deity fully aware of both at once. The specific line “one god with two bodies” is used. That goes way beyond clones or twins.

Since this basically a multi-tiered question allow me to break it down.

1. God and Alien Intelligence splinter essence yes all can use linked weapon. Because they are all basically the same person and controlling spirit, persona etc..
2. Doppelgangers NO. It is a different being or copy (thus the have their own personality control or consciousness; that is not controlled by the creator). Yes they could use the rune item (same, race, alignment etc..) but are not linked in anyway. Crystal weapons would fall into the category of not being able to be used.
3. Multiple Self's super power is the same person in all versions and under control of the original. So yes rune items could be used by any of them.
4. Lastly, the wizard would not be able to Clone or Copy himself and have the rune weapons linked. Only the original would have the link.

(Obviously stupid game breaking tricks won't work. For example: A magic item that granted three wishes to each person. You can't make infinity copies of yourself and get endless wishes).

Would a doppleganger have the same true name, so could a doppleganger sort of protect you from a summoning circle?

I was looking for something else in the Rifters and stumbled across this quote in the Q&A section:

"Can a magically created duplicate of a character(i.e., Doppelganger, or ID Self) control objects that can only be controlled by the original? No, they cannot act as the original to control things the original sorcerer created. This means they cannot be used to recharge Talismans created by the true mage or by another duplicate."
