return of the swimsuit issue

Unread post by cl7277 »

is there any body out there that would like to see the return of the swimsuit issue or would people love to see more info on the mega-verse at large? Personaly I liked the swimsuit issue's but I would love to see info on the other area's as well. Maybe a small layout, and world info now that would be a cool rifter.

Count me in. I think the Swimsuit Issue is also a good way for some emerging talents to see their work in print.

I have no interest in the swimsuit editions. For me, they are a waste of space on my bookshelf that could be filled with other, more useful books. Though the pictures of the PB staff in the first one were good for a one time laugh.

Well I hope the next one will focus on BtS,PFrpg and Rifts:Phase world,s characters.

Rifter 39 and 43 had 8 characters for Rifts.
I like to see female characters for the other games too.

Only if they get real women in swimsuits to model for the char picts. Would be nice to have that issue in full color too.

I liked the swimsuit issues. Nothing wrong with having a good sense of humor about yourself.

If another was to be done, I suggest that the images of the characters have statistics so that the book/ swim suit issue holds more value in the game environment. Make it about the game and less fluff. Even the Playboy spread tells birthday and body measurements that were left out of the swimsuit issue... It really was a wasted book. I suppose it was funny too, depending on what you think is funny, you know with the PB staff inside it half dressed and all.

In all fairness, it was only the first one that didn't include stats. The latter two had each "babe" fully statted out for use as an NPC femme fatale.

I'm not saying I want the swimsuit editions back or anything, as I am ambivalent on the subject. As a writer, they were a fun juxtaposition of the creative process though. :)

Another thing, any SSI should be a ".5's", or and in between issue between the spring and summer issues of the rifter. Having none but SS clad people and stats. It would also be nice to have their normal clothing picts also.

Yeah, I say the swimsuit issues in the late 80's/early 90's where they belong.
I wouldn't have minded a one time thing, but 1 out of 4 issues a year dedicated to a swimsuit issue? No, thanks.
Let's just stick to gaming material.

Instead of a swimsuit issue, How about they put out 6 issues a year instead of 4.

I wouldn't mind the swimsuit issues returning, but only if the swimsuit section was trimmed down to maybe 12-15 pages of just pin-ups. I appreciate wanting to give each lady a nice little bio to make her more than just eye candy, but those extra pages could be better spent on more interesting gaming material. Besides, I'd rather take the picture and create an NPC of my own for the most part, rather than use the pre-packaged versions presented.

I didn't 'Dislike" the swimsuit issue. My only complaint was one that has been raised here. "With only 4 issues a year, 1/4th of my subscription for a swimsuit/gimmic issue seemed a bit much"

If we got... 6 issues a year it'd be one thing. If we got 12. Sure toss me a swimsuit issue. But with only 4 it seems .... Not like a 'dodge' per say, but a bit of a waste.

I've also got like 2 or 3 of each. lol They end up in my grab bags with alarming frequency, lol to the point when I fill out my grab bag wish list I start off with "I love the swimsuit issues, but I have 2 or 3 of each, so please save those and give them to people whom don't yet have them. Spread the love" lol "Santa Kev" and crew have been good about it the last few years. (( God how I love the grab bags... can't wait for my first this year))

I loathe the swimsuit issues. They don't contain enough quality material to justify purchasing them. Gaming magazines should be for gaming. Plus, this is dangerously close to "Playsquid."

I think they were fun for what they were. I think like many things they had their time and place and I like many others, enjoyed them at the time. But with Rifter only doing 4 issues a year, that their time and place has passed. Again if we were getting 6 issues a year, 1 as a gimmicky sort of deal wouldn't be so bad. or if the swimsuit issue was an "Extra" I.E. We get 4 issues a year and the Swimsuit is a 'bonus issue' it'd be awesome. But one fourth of the year's books.. mmmm not so much a want right now.

lol I used to get them in christmas grab bags. Till I got like 3 copies of each and purposefully tell them that I've got multiple copies of each. Since I've started that I've only gotten one more. Kev and crew are pretty good with the grab bags. I give them mad props for them. (( and buy two or three a year))

yeah have to agree with Pepsi Jedi....if the rifter was monthly...a yearly swimsuit issue would be a nice little tradition

but when one out of four books is nothing but a few character write ups, is that really worth the cover price? I'm amazed that it hasn't killed the number of subscribers, who ar essentialy paying for 4 books and getting....3 and half at most

on a side note, I feel the same way (to a lesser extent) to about the yearly halloween issue....again, that means a quarter of the Rifter is dedicated to "horror", another quarter is dedicated to pin ups, and 50% is dedicated to supeheroes/sci-fi/fantasy/other. Heck if your completely discountign the swimsuit issue as a worthwhile purchase, it's like a third of the Rifter is dedicated to horror

...which wouldn't be a bad thing if Dead Reign/Nightbane and Beyond the Supernatural were palladiums moneymakers

As much as I'd love a monthly issue.... sometimes they really scrape to get the quarterly out. We saw how long an how many 100s of pages that damn forge story went for, and I think we can all name a few articles that seemed...... lacking.

Not their fault. Sometimes there's just not that much to print. I'd love bimonthly. I think they could pull that off and keep the quality, but 3 times as many... I don't think so.

Swim suit issues!! They're smut...pure smut.

Kevin Siembieda is the Larry Flint of gaming!!!

--------Kidding-------

I think the whole swimsuit issue is totally 'boss' and unique. I don't think any other game company does anything like it either.

A removable full color centerfold would be nice too. Ya know for the man cave/game pit.

I'd be for a swimsuit calendar (not as part of a Rifter but an actual calendar) or a special edition maybe every other year that was in addition to the 4 Rifters per year.

You know. That's not a totally horrid idea. A Palladium swimsuit Calender, using art from the games and what not would be kinda neat.

Conversely just a "Palladium calender" would too. It'd take about an hour to do. First half hour assigning art. Then wait for the art to come in, the second half an hour arranging it on any program that lets you design calenders. Then, Profit.

Just don't print a billion of them. Print off a limited number each year and when you run out, you run out. Keep it independent of the rifter. (( Or a bonus for people who order the rifter and a side item for those who don't.)

Actually, Pepsi Jedi makes a good point right there. Having a limited run of the calendar each year, making it an incentive for Rifter subscriptions & an option for those who just want a calendar from Palladium is good thinking.

They did that back in '92 or so. The pics it had were the covers of the books available at the time, the color pics in the main book, and the centerfold was the pic of the CS patrol in the ruins of Old-Chicago.

That's cool, but instead of recycling art. (( I know Palladium loves to do it. :) ))

Make it all new art. Like the stuff they DID get for the Swimsuit issues. Muma's 4 armed borg girl... or his girl with the sword... stuff like that was new and looked great.

I.E. don't 'Cheep out on it'. Don't make it "Just covers from books we've already got"

Make it some new art. You'd only need 12 to 15 pieces. I'd think the Palladium artists would like it. Wouldn't take too long to do.

I'd agree. Unfortunately, full-page color art doesn't come cheap... especially if it's cover-quality. So 12 new pieces for a calendar that may or may not sell well enough to cover the costs may not be a risk Palladium wants to take at the moment. Of course, if enough people mentioned that they'd like to see it (like, maybe on the All Things Palladium Books forum) Kev MIGHT consider it. :-D

I'm somewhat skeptical that enough people would, though. :-(

And there's the rub. For media where the draw is primarily visual, color tends to trump B&W. The single image, tear-off pages mentioned by Mephisto could work. Although I think that might drop it to the status of a novelty item rather than having substantial pull for art-fans as well (buying an art-calendar is somewhat similar to buying a portfolio of prints). Of course if enough people asked for them...

What would be a good way for some emerging talents would be a contest where the winner might get a little price, such has have one of their drawing published in a sourcebook or something.
the only reason why you write that is that you want to see pictures of girls in swimsuits

Who's this Muma guy, Pepi Jedi?

Forget the swimsuit issues! I'm still waiting for prints of Splynncryth in his speedo!

are they doing another Swimsuit issue? Those are my favorites! But only if they got the stats for'em, my players are still chasing the 'Hottie Ranger'.

I thought that they were fun, and kind of liked them. I kind of looked at it as a NPC book, so adding some guys to it could also work. But I hope they do it again.

This item might appeal to the fans of swimsuit issues. Premier created some very impressive artwork for Splicers RPG here, link! A colored version, by Kevarin, is there, link! And, way over yonder are her stats, in the fourth post of this thread, super-hyper-link!
