it says it uses an action in the general discriptions of the moves.

2. the point is anyone can do it and it's in all of palladiums games. you don't even need combat training to do it. the point is, it's there because they CAN do it.

3. not all styles have breakfall, and so it's still good to have.

4. there is an "automatic Roll" in some forms that do not take an action, thereby further reinforcing that the normal one does.

No. Not in N&S anyway.

Bah, what a time for Kuseru to be absent :p

As I understand it, automatic roll just lets you roll with an unlimited number of punches, falls, or impacts at a time (which like ks said, makes it useful against multiple attackers).

Bonuses to roll with punch/fall/impact apparently also apply to the roll attack move and the ninja's roll/knockdown attack.

It should also be noted that in N&S dodge bonuses apply to automatic dodges, but automatic dodge doesn't work the same way as in other games.

That's right, in N&S, Roll with Punch/Fall/Impact does NOT use an attack. This is most likely because Breakfall (the superior version with way better results) does cost an attack.

As is stated here (multiple times, directly from the book) Automatic Roll just allows you to "roll" away from multiple attacks.

[I should note here that the turn-based combat system in N&S doesn't quite fit with some of the combat move descriptions which insinuate that all attacks and defenses are occurring pretty much at the same time...i.e. multiple dodge, automatic roll, etc.).]
