The Nature of Chi Powers in N&S

Unread post by Mantisking »

This is an idea I had a while back while out walking and have been mulling over ever since.

Generally in Taoist theory life is balanced for every Yin there's a Yang and vice-versa, yadda, yadda, yadda. From what I can tell in N&S the Chi Powers and Zenjorike are set up the same way For example Hard Chi -- which is about creating internal lines of force -- and Soft Chi -- which is about creating external circles of force -- are polar opposites. So looking at the relationship between powers allows us to create new powers where opposites don't exist. The following list is the way I see things aligning.

Hard Chi.................Soft Chi
Find Weakness..........
Chi Healing..............
...........................Fist Gesture
Body Chi.................One Finger
Dragon Chi...............Dark Chi
Calm Minds...............
Chi Invisibility............
Radiate Positive Chi.....Negative Chi Polarity
Heal The Mind............
.............................Inflict Negative Chi Illness
Chi Weight Control.......Control Negative Chi
Chi Overcharge...........Fill Object with Chi
Divert Incoming Chi......

Now from looking at that list I've already come up with two ideas for new Martial Arts Powers.

Any comments, questions, or witty reparte?

After thinking about it, Zanshin would be a good fit as the thematic opposite to Chi Invisibility. It's internal and it is about keeping your mind clear enough to sense the actions of others.

Chi Healing and Inflict Negative Chi Illness are already polar opposites. Stated canon says treatments for the Negative Chi Ilnesses are "run its course or treatment can be sought from those who deal in Positive Chi Healing".

They're not, and I'll explain why. Chi Healing is a positive power that works both on yourself (internal) and others (external). Inflict Negative Chi Illness is a negative power that only works on others (external), so, therefore, they can't be polar opposities.

So, hypothetically speaking, what would be opposite theoretical powers to the canon ones that do not currently have existing antitheses?

Right now, I've only got two theoreticals. "Hide Weakness" for Find Weakness and "Incite Fury" for Calm Minds.

Does it necessarily have to be fury? Couldn't it be any sort of negative or otherwise unstable emotion (fear for example)?

True. I just feel like fury works as a better opposite to calm. Also, I realized in the interim that it doesn't work under the specifications I set forth. I'd need a negative/internal power rather than a negative/external.

What about something like fuel rage, maybe granting some PS/PE bonuses but with a hit to judgment and possibly some defensive combat penalties?

I'll think about it. I'm still going to create the "Incite Fury" zenjorike, It's just going to have a different relationship than the one I proposed earlier.

Right. Either way, I like where this is going.
