I just say that it is an innate feeling they have at all times. They know how much energy they have to call on and how much each spell they cast needs. It is part of their training as a Magic User.

Problem with that is Psi-Stalker abilities to sense the supernatural or track them is hampered by Ley Lines and Nexus points make it useless. They're not being put there to sense incoming mages, they're being shipped in for a meal and then shipped back out again, to keep fed and keep the PPE levels...
