Palladium Books® Weekly Update – March 28, 2014

By Kevin Siembieda

It has been an extra long time – 10 days – since the last Weekly Update posted early on Tuesday, March 18th. In some ways a lot has happened since then.

Wayne and the GAMA Trade Show

The reason the previous Update was posted early was that Wayne had to leave for Las Vegas to represent Palladium Books at the GAMA Trade Show. He was met by long-time Palladium helper and pal, Joe Bergmans, who served as local native guide and Palladium Representative. Together, Wayne and Joe talked to retailers about upcoming product releases and the new releases stores could expect in the Spring and Summer. The greatest interest was in the long-awaited Rifts® titles and, of course, Robotech® RPG Tactics™. Retailers was delighted with the prototypes on hand, and we ourselves were surprised to have John at Ninja Division drop off four new factory prototypes, including the Mk.II Monster, one of my personal favorites. They looked great and were a nice addition to the display. Like everyone else, retailers are anxiously awaiting the initial release of Robotech® RPG Tactics™. (Us too.) When not at the trade show, Wayne and Joe enjoyed some of the local cuisine, including a phenomenal sushi restaurant. Wayne left Tuesday afternoon and arrived back at the Palladium office on Friday afternoon looking rather worn out.

Writing, writing, editing and writing . . .

That’s pretty much ALL I have been doing for the last 10 day straight, and counting. Wayne looked worn out so I gave him the weekend off, but Jeff, Alex and I worked through the weekend. I’ve spent most of my time writing and editing for hours on end. Wayne, Jeff, Alex and I will be working through this coming weekend as well until the next couple of books are done and at the printer. Whew. Everything is moving forward, but not at the speed any of us would like to see. Still, good things are coming, and very, very soon.

BACK IN PRINT! The “Collected” Mechanoid Invasion® Trilogy – available now

Due to popular demand, the 8½x11 softcover edition of the “collected” Mechanoid Invasion® Trilogy is back in print. I collected the original three Mechanoids® books back in 1998. This is the new first new printing in 16 years (though it has been available as a PDF on DrivethruRPG.com for years). I decided to bring it back as a short printing because it was the Number One most requested out of print title during Grab Bag season and has been requested by several people since. Not sure what the sudden interest in The Mechanoids® is again, but I’m happy to see it. I hope you enjoy it. See the full description later in this Weekly Update and the online store.

The Mechanoid Invasion® Trilogy holds a special place in my heart, because it was the very first product published by Palladium Books. Originally released as a comic book-sized, 64 page, standalone RPG with two follow-up books (hence, “trilogy”), each expanded the setting, characters, story and rules. All are included in the trilogy collection pretty much as they originally appeared back in 1981 and 1982 (complete with typos). As tiny startup company working out of my home, I wrote, illustrated, laid out (by hand), pasted up, boxed and shipped the whole darn thing. I had a few friends help out, I handled 90% of everything. Erick Wujcik pitched in offering ideas and feedback, and doing a little writing in the first book. Bill Loebs (as in comic book artist and writer William Messner Loebs) pitched in to do a bit of artwork and editing. My pal since 8th Grade, Alex Marciniszyn (given credit as Alex Martin), helped on a lot of fronts, from encouragement to layout and shipping, and Bill’s mother, Francis Loebs (bless her beautiful soul), helped get that first book published by lending me half the money I needed. Wild. Anyway, it’s back in print in one big book for your enjoyment. It’s sitting in the warehouse ready to ship to you right now.

UPDATE: Rifts® Northern Gun Two

As Daffy Duck once said, “Shoot me now.” That’s the way I feel some days, because despite working nonstop on Rifts® Northern Gun™ Two over the last 10 days (and counting!), the darn book still is not finished. I've hit some rough patches and I’m just writing stinking slow. On average, 10-12 manuscript pages per a day, with 10 hours dedicated to just writing. That’s awful by my standards. Yesterday was much better with me banging out 25 pages, but . . . . arrghh. I hate being behind schedule. I hate disappointing people. I know some folks seem to think we don’t care about our fans or release schedule, and sit around the office goofing off, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Anyone who works here or comes around on a regular basis, like Chuck Walton, Mark Dudley and Ben Rodriguez, can attest to the fact that we all put in painfully long hours every single day and most weekends, trying to make everything awesome and sent to the printer. Not enough hours in the flippin’ day.

I am thrilled to report that while I’m writing slower than I’d like, Rifts® Northern Gun™ Two is epic, awesome and jam-packed with new power armor and stuff that I think you will love. In fact, Alex walked into my office as I was writing this Update with something to say. He had just finished editing the most recent batch of material and he had a big grin on his face. “Kev,” he said of the material, “great. Just great. Every single part. The fans are going to love this book. As a science fiction and high-tech junkie, I love this book.” Whew, what a relief. When you work on a big, stat-filled book like this, after a while you’re just in too deep to be able to judge your own work anymore.

We’re almost there! Hopefully I can keep up yesterday’s pace through the weekend and get this bad boy to the printer in time for my birthday, April 2nd. That’s the plan. Wayne has all the artwork scaled and sized, and is ready to typeset and layout as soon as the rest is done!

DON’T FORGET, you can see a Rifts® Northern Gun Two Sneak Preview – available free on DriveThruRPG.com

Get a small peak at Rifts® Northern Gun™ Two with this free preview. Remember, this is only a small sampling of what you can expect. There are 30+ suits of power armor, new body armor, Hovercycle Ride Armor, vehicles, drones and lots of other gear to delight players and Game Masters alike.

Plus we plan to add other sneak previews. Btw, the original Rifts® Vampire Kingdoms World Book is also available as a PDF on DriveThruRPG, for those of you who may be interested. More are coming.

UPDATE: The Rifter® #66 – ships April

All the material for this issue has been selected and gone through an initial proofreading and edit by Alex. Artwork is coming in from the artists and looking nice as usual. Of course, with us all working like mad dogs on Rifts® Northern Gun™ Two and Robotech® RPG Tactics™, the release of The Rifter® #66 may get pushed back a week or two. It’s another great issue. See the full description in this Weekly Update and the online store. Cover price has increased to $13.95 and remains a steal for a 96 page sourcebook.

UPDATE: Rifts® Megaverse® in Flames – Ships April/May

Can’t wait to dive into this book. There is some foreshadowing of things to come in Rifts® Northern Gun™ Two.

UPDATE: Dead Reign: Graveyard Earth Sourcebook – ships May

The E.M. Gist cover painting is done and it is fabulous. I’ve been making some notes on material I want to add to the book, and author Matthew Clements has gone back into it to add some bits and pieces as well. See the full description elsewhere in this Weekly Update and in the online store.

UPDATE: Robotech® RPG Tactics

Prototypes are coming in from the manufacturer, we’re making corrections as needed, approving material for manufacturing, taking one last look over the rule book, laying out the color guide and trying to keep you, our stalwart supporters, in the loop the best we can with our demanding schedule. Excitement is running high as we get closer and closer to manufacturing.

TIME IS RUNNING OUT. The Heroes Unlimited Anniversary SALE ends April 13, 2014

We did it for Palladium Fantasy RPG® last year, so we are doing it for Heroes Unlimited™. ALL HU2 titles – with a few exceptions like the already “priced to sell” hardcover edition – are 30% off right now and running till April 13, 2014. Get ‘em while they’re on sale! Happy Anniversary!

UPDATE: Gen Con Indy – August 2014

First, I want to thank Gary Miller, who has been one of the driving forces behind coordinating Palladium’s Gen Con Indy gaming events, as well as NMI/Jeff Ruiz, and Bill Korsak who got the whole thing rolling in the first place. Thanks to the efforts of Gary, Jeff and the many G.M.s, Palladium has scores of gaming events as part of the “official” Gen Con game schedule. Three times more than ever before. I very much want to thank ALL the Game Masters who have committed to running Palladium gaming events at Gen Con. You guys are AWESOME! I know putting all of this together was not easy. Thank you one and all.

Gary Miller (who is also one of the four gents who help organize and run Palladium’s Megaversal Ambassador program) will also serve as the Palladium Books Onsite Game Coordinator at Gen Con Indy. I also believe Gary, Jeff Ruiz, Carmen Bellaire and a few other G.M.s will be running role-playing games at the Palladium booth. These are games in addition to the official games in the program. Sign-up sheets will be posted at the Palladium Booth.

I know, I know, it is kind of early for me to be talking about Gen Con Indy, but I wanted all the people who have been working so hard to make this Gen Con special for Palladium to know that their efforts are appreciated. See ya all in August and game on!

UPDATE: 2015 Palladium Open House – Important, we need your input

We have been running into a number of roadblocks in finding hotels and suitable dates for the 2015 Palladium Open House. The ideal weekend of April 30, May 1, 2 & 3 is NOT available as there is a big Michigan University event that grabs ALL the hotels in the area. The following weekend is Mother’s Day, so that’s out too. The next weekend is available but it is later than we have ever held an Open House – May 14 (VIP Thursday), 15, 16, and 17 (Friday thru Sunday). This is the only weekend that seems available to us. Moreover, hotel prices have also gone up. So the best price we could get is $109 (plus tax) at the Plymouth Clock Tower Hotel, the same one we’ve used for years and one of the nicest hotels in the area (for the price).

QUESTION #1: Does the May 14-17, 2015 date and $109 price per double-bed room work for you guys and gals? PLEASE let us know as soon as possible. Sorry, this was the best date and hotel room rate we could get. We’ll start to list full detail in a few weeks.

QUESTION #2: It has been so frustrating that I have considered cancelling the event. I mean it has been a couple years since we’ve done one. The Palladium Open House events have always been truly amazing and wonderful, but is the Open House something Palladium gamers are even still interested in coming to? We love welcoming you to the Palladium office and warehouse for a long weekend of non-stop Palladium gaming and presenting to you 30-50 Palladium creators. We have a blast, and past Open Houses have been nothing short of stellar, but is this something you even want to see happen? Please let us know. If you want it, we’ll do it. I guess, I just can’t tell and I’m in a funk about product being late.

Closing thoughts

We want to stay focused on work, so that’s it for this week’s Update. Please respond to the Open House question as soon as you can. Thanks. My apologies for my silence on Facebook and lack of Murmurs. I’ve just been so swamped writing and editing and coordinating so much stuff. All looking good. Will try to post more often. Keep the faith. It’s not long now before books start coming your way. Heck, the Mechanoid Invasion® Trilogy is available right now. The Palladium Fantasy Hardcover in a couple weeks and NG-2 and The Rifter® #66 a couple weeks after that. Not bad. Keep those imaginations burning bright.

MEchanoid Invasion Trilogy

The “Collected” Mechanoid Invasion® Trilogy – available now

This is the original three Mechanoid Invasion® books published in 1981 and 1982 and first collected in one volume in 1998. The collection is back due to popular demand from YOU. It contains all the material that appeared in the original three Mechanoid Invasion® books plus some background history. This is the game and sourcebooks that launched Palladium Books.

The story of the Mechanoid Invasion® is a tragic one that spans the galaxy and generations of people. The Mechanoid Invasion® starts on a distant planet being colonized by humans, until the Mechanoids arrive. The seemingly alien mechanized monsters intend to strip the planet of all its resources and literally carve it up into pieces and haul it away. The loss of human lives mean nothing to them. Indeed, the Mechanoids seem to delight in capturing, torturing and slaughtering what humans they can find. Can nothing stop the destruction?

The Journey follows the story of human colonists from the doomed planet surviving by living between the walls and tunnels like rats on a ship.

Homeworld carries our story to the Mechnoids’ homeworld in search of answers, but only more mystery, carnage and alien menaces await.

All of the above are contained in this one, 208 page volume. Back in print because YOU demanded it. But this volume is also unique as it gives you a glimpse of Palladium Books from its very beginning. Enjoy.

Heroes Unlimited 30th Anniversary Hardcover

NEW! Heroes Unlimited 30th Anniversary Hardcover Edition – only $40 while supplies last – available now

The Heroes Unlimited™ RPG turns 30 years old this year. To celebrate, Palladium is releasing a special, commemorative, Heroes Unlimited™ 30th Anniversary Hardcover, for only $40. Available now. The original HU2 hardcover sold for $50 and has since become a collector’s item that sells for $200-$350 on the secondary market.

To preserve the value of the “original” Heroes Unlimited™ Gold Hardcover Edition, we have made the HU2 30th Anniversary Edition as visibly different (and cool) looking on the outside as possible. The material used for the cover is different (not leatherette), the color is a lighter shade of blue, and although the cover is imprinted in gold foil, it features artwork depicting a superhero and the words “Special 30th Anniversary Edition.” Even the spine is different looking, and the end sheets are red and without art. The red, white and blue combination represents the United States of America, the birthplace of superhero comic books, and the colors of costumed heroes.

All the elements described above should make the Heroes Unlimited™ 30th Anniversary Hardcover impossible to mistake for the original HU2 signed and numbered HC edition. We have kept the price an unprecedented, low $40 for a hardcover Gold Edition of this size. We want to give Heroes Unlimited™ fans a crack at purchasing one before the price skyrockets on the secondary collectors’ market. Enjoy and game on!

Palladium Fantasy RPG 30th Anniversary Hardcover

NEW! Palladium Fantasy RPG®, 2nd Edition, 30th Anniversary Hardcover Edition – only $40 while supplies last – April Release – Second Edition Rules.

It doesn’t seem fair to offer a Heroes Unlimited™ Hardcover Edition and not one for Palladium Fantasy®, so Rifter® subscribers were the first to get the news that Palladium is releasing a Palladium Fantasy® Special 30th Anniversary Hardcover in April. The Palladium Fantasy RPG® was released in June of 1983, so technically, the Fantasy Game is still 30 years old until June.

The original Crimson Edition hardcover sold for $50 and has since become a collector’s item that sells for $250-$400 on the secondary market. The special, commemorative, 30th Anniversary Hardcover in April will sell for only $40.

To preserve the value of the “original” Palladium Fantasy RPG® Crimson Edition Hardcover, we have made the 30th Anniversary Edition as visibly different looking on the outside as possible. The material used for the cover is a brown leatherette imprinted with “Elemental Green” foil, different art on the cover, and the words “Special 30th Anniversary Edition.” Even the spine is different looking and the end sheets are without artwork.

All the elements described above should make the Palladium Fantasy RPG® 30th Anniversary Hardcover impossible to mistake for the original signed and numbered HC edition. The price is $40 (while supplies last), low for a limited edition of its size. We want to give Fantasy fans a crack at purchasing one before the price skyrockets on the secondary collectors’ market.

Second Edition rules. There has been some confusion among fans as to whether this hardcover edition is First or Second Edition rules. It is SECOND Edition rules, exactly the same as the current material in the softcover book.
