Palladium Books® Weekly Update – June 14, 2012

By Kevin Siembieda

Controversy over Good News

When I posted the findings of an ongoing survey among “Palladium” customers/fans/gamers in the last Weekly Update, I never imagined the controversy it would stir up among some people. Yikes. It was meant to be positive news and most people took it as such, but some took it otherwise.

I ranted about this a bit in a Murmur From the Megaverse® entitled I’m Perplexed, but I want to touch upon a few things and more good news in this Weekly Update.

1. I made it very clear the data that was gleaned came from “Palladium fans” – i.e. gamers who know and play our games. I never suggested it was anything else. It was good news. Why? Because Step One in building any business is satisfying your core customer base. Your “core” will spread the word and help build the company on many different levels. They – YOU – are the rock upon which we build. So, as I said in my Murmur, yes, I am very happy that the majority of Palladium fans are very satisfied. I’m thrilled that even many of Palladium’s harshest and nastiest critics want more product and want to see Palladium get strong. (They just have a funny way of showing their support.)

2. My survey drew from panel talks and one-on-one conversations by me with some of the fans at the Palladium Open House, VisionCon, and telephone conversations with some gamers who participated in the Lemuria Megaverse® Insider offer, as well as gamers, freelancers and people at “other” events and chats. So far, this has included a few hundred people. FYI: Comments from Palladium Christmas Surprise Packages (that’s a couple thousand people) support this data.

3. There are different methods of gathering information and conducting surveys. Mine has been informal. Most gamers involved probably didn’t even realize I was gathering information. By the way, I have found that’s the best way to get an honest and sincere response. No, I did not walk around with a clipboard and approach people saying, “Hi, I’m conducting a survey. Would you answer the following questions?” Sheesh. Oh, and I’m very good at collecting and analyzing data, discerning new trends and finding new markets for new products. In fact, at Palladium, we constantly reassess the market by listening to friends, fans, critics, haters, competition and outside sources. A closed mind and plugged ears is a recipe for doom.

4. I hate how people jump to crazy conclusions. None of us at Palladium are complacent. Nor do we dismiss the comments and suggestions of anybody, not even critics. Just because we may have a different opinion or be focusing on something different, does not mean your views are invalid or ignored.

5. Of course, Palladium needs to do the following (listed in no particular order):

  • More advertising.
  • Attract new gamers.
  • Release more product.
  • Hit our deadlines or come a lot closer to them on a regular basis.
  • Listen to our fans and well-intentioned people everywhere. (We always do. Always have. Always will.)
  • Explore and plumb digital media, including e-books, PDFs, and much, much more.
  • Push the envelope and try new things.

If we do not seem to be doing the things above, there are reasons.

The number one reason continues to be lack of resources: money and skilled manpower. We cannot advertise, release more product, hire more people or do a million other things you and I would love to see, if we don’t have the funds and skilled people to make them happen.

That’s where crowdfunding comes in. The Megaverse® Insider is one weapon in Palladium’s growing arsenal that helps raise the funds to do some of this. It is not Palladium’s salvation, but it very much helps Palladium to finance the things we need to do to get stronger and grow the company.

I find it strange that some people act as if “crowdfunding” is some kind of scam, con game, charity or just plain bad. It is an accepted and rapidly growing business practice used across ALL industries and markets. Palladium’s Megaverse® Insider offers provide real products and services that have real value. Tens of thousand of companies are using crowdfunding. Palladium didn’t invent the idea (wish we did), but we’ll use innovative ideas. A friend sent me an email just yesterday saying: “I read an article in the last couple of weeks that said crowdsourcing is the new pre-order! Guess you guys are trendsetters!”

Here is a shocking fun fact that Carmen Bellaire told me last Friday: He read somewhere that something like 75% of all crowdfunding fails. (Disclaimer to nitpickers: This is what Carmen told me. Our own research suggests the failure rate is more like 60%, which is still a big number. More than half are NOT successful.). I mention this because I’m happy and proud that Palladium’s first crowdfunding venture was a resounding success. Our current one is also on track for success. YOU should be proud of these accomplishments too, because YOU are directly responsible for these successes. All of us are doing what we can to make this a year of rebirth and success for Palladium Books. We cannot do it without you.

I’m tired of strife and bad news, aren’t you?

One of the Lemuria Insiders I spoke with said, “You know, Kev, me and other Palladium fans just want to see Palladium strong again so we can stop worrying about you and the company.”

I thought that was a very sweet and kind thing to say. And you know what? Me too. We all want Palladium to reach a place where we can stop worrying about the company’s future. And that’s exactly what we are working very hard to achieve. Best of all, we are making progress.

Now is the Palladium Renaissance

Everything I am doing is about Palladium’s renaissance in 2012! The release of a lot of new, dynamic product, the revitalization of the Megaverse® Ambassador program, doing more conventions, working to release new product on a regular basis, and last year’s Creators Conference where Palladium’s writers and artists accepted the challenge to push the envelope and take their craft and Palladium products to a new level, are ALL part of Palladium’s campaign to build the company and be strong again. I’m tired of struggling. I’m ready for new product and a new era of prosperity. It’s hard work, but don’t let anyone fool you, we are making progress on all fronts.

This year (and next) is the big push. With additional funding Palladium is doing more advertising. We are releasing dynamic new books and reprinting old favorites. We are pushing the envelope. We are paying down debt and getting stronger. We always listen to our customers. We always welcome new opportunities. We are doing all this and more behind the scenes, but we are still rebuilding and reorganizing. Palladium Books is currently still only five people plus freelancers, friends and volunteers, but we are making headway. We are excited about new releases, growth and Palladium’s future.

Megaverse® Insider crowdfunding is only one way to help Palladium build and grow.

As I have said, the Megaverse® Insider is one weapon in Palladium’s growing arsenal. It is not the end all and be all. The more money we can generate by every means available, the more product we can produce. The more product we release, the more we sell. The more money Palladium makes, the more resources we have at our disposal to do even more advertising, to continue to reduce debt, make improvements, hire more skilled creators and staff to produce new and different products, and to take risks in new areas of gaming, technology and marketing.

It is the "snowball effect" of basic business. It is what Palladium is doing right now, and it’s already starting to work! Palladium is getting stronger and able to do more. We can’t stop. We need to push harder and keep going strong. This is why we have one great new product after another slated for release this year and next. We are not perfect. Never pretended to be. We will make some mistakes, and yes, we’ll miss deadlines, but not by six months or a year. And the products coming out now rock! The next six are about to start coming out in rapid succession. Our goal is to continue to wow and get people shouting from the rafters: “Look at this!”

UPDATE: New Releases

Rifts® Vampires Sourcebook, Rifts® Black Market, Rifts® Northern Gun™ One, Northern Gun™ Two, The Rifter® #59 and Robotech® Genesis Pits™ Sourcebook are all in various stages of final production and coming together well. Rifts® Vampires Sourcebook and Rifts® Black Market are both going to be crowd pleasers. To make these books the best they can be, I have already expanded the page count of Rifts® Black Market and seem likely to do the same for Rifts® Northern Gun™ One and possibly NG-2. A few people have groused about the cover to Rifts® Black Market. Some will like it, some won’t. As I often do, I’m giving a new artist a shot. He’s a guy I like and believe in. Not every piece of art is going to rock your world, but you’ll love the source material.

UPDATE: Online Sales

With the Megaverse® Insider offer creating buzz, sales across the board have picked up nicely. Please, keep ‘em coming. And don’t overlook the nifty bookmarks, Chi-Town Library pencils, T-shirts and mugs.

UPDATE: Rifts® Northern Gun™ One Megaverse® Insider

We are off to a good start and should hit or exceed our goal by the time the offer ends on June 25, 2012. As noted before, moneys that exceed our target goal are applied to the development of other products, advertising, reducing our debt load, and other efforts to make Palladium strong.

Your support is appreciated, but please, do NOT overextend yourselves. Purchase what you want and what you can afford. NOTE: The special items like art prints that the higher levels of participation receive are NOT the same as those in the Lemuria Megaverse® Insider offer; they are completely new and different. How else would they be special? Each new offer will always be something new and special, unless stated otherwise.

IMPORTANT: Rifts® Northern Gun™ 1 & 2 are the LAST crowfunding offers for the year

There seems to be some confusion over the current Northern Gun™ crowdfunding. I have posted a longer explanation in a Murmur from the Megaverse®, but I want to make sure everyone sees this.

The crowdfunding offers for Northern Gun™ One and Two are the LAST TWO of 2012. I didn’t want to strain our fans’ wallets by doing another one in the Fall near Christmas season, so these are the last two crowdfunding offers for the year.

The Northern Gun™ offer was originally planned as ONE offer for both titles with a possible third Insider offer in the Fall. HOWEVER, many people asked Palladium to separate the offers into two (2) separate ones, a month apart, so they could afford both. We always try to listen to our customers, so I broke the Megaverse® Insider offer into two different ones as requested by you. Since the two books are coming out one after the other, Palladium has the NG-1 Insider offer going now, and the NG-2 Insider offer will take place in July. Because one offer became two in a row for these two related books, I figured we would make them the last two Insider offers of 2012. We are NOT doing crowdfunding every month. That would be insane. As I have stated in the past, Palladium plans to do only 3-4 crowdfunding offers a year. The last one was four months ago (February) for Rifts® Lemuria, and you know how awesome that turned out for all parties.

The two Northern Gun™ Insider offers are your only two (2) opportunities to get Insider products and to help Palladium for the year. Our goal is to raise the funds to cover the costs of these two gorgeous Rifts® titles, and give Palladium another push as we rocket into the Summer and Fall. I should have made this clear about the two Northern Gun™ Megaverse® Insider offers when we made the announcement last week. My mistake and sincere apologies for any misconceptions or confusion I may have caused. Thanks for your continuing love and support. Enjoy the summer and game on!

Megaverse Insider

Northern Gun ONE Megaverse® Insider – ends June 25, 2012

A Megaverse® Insider offer is a way for you to purchase special, collectible and fun items and opportunities not available to the general public and help fund Palladium projects at the same time. Such “crowdfunding” offers are a new way for companies to raise funds for major releases, like Northern Gun One and Two. Moneys made above and beyond our projected goals for the specific projects are applied to paying off debt, increasing promotion and advertising, creating other new products and so on.

Palladium is doing the Insider offer on the two related Northern Gun™ books as two separate crowdfunding offers, five weeks apart. The Rifts® Northern Gun™ One Megaverse® Insider offer is going on now and runs till June 25. The items offered are only available during this crowdfunding period. The Northern Gun™ Two Megaverse® Insider offer starts July 12. NOTE: All special items and prints are new and different from the previous Rifts® Lemuria Megaverse® Insider offer. Each new offer contains its own unique set of collectibles and keepsakes. These two (2), back to back Megaverse® Insider offers of related titles are the LAST TWO crowdfunding offers of 2012. Get ‘em while you can.
