One game system – every genre – countless worlds – endless adventure

I hope everyone enjoyed a nice Memorial Day Weekend. We did and now we are pounding away on the books you want.

Anime North

Chuck Walton and I spent part of last week and the Memorial Day long weekend in Toronto, Canada, where we were guests at Anime North. There we met up with our friends Todd Spencley, Apollo Okamura (artist), Greg Diaczyk (writer) and his family (wife Jennifer, his boys, Caleb, Josh, and Noah, and Harry, his father), Braden Campbell (writer) and his family (Holly and Annachie), as well as a number of Palladium fans and show runners. As usual there were thousands upon thousands of amazing cosplay costumes, and waaaaay too many cool things to see and do. One highlight was Todd treating us to the movies where we saw and enjoyed Solo, A Star Wars Story. Another was Saturday night dinner with Todd, Apollo, Greg and Jennifer. It was nice to actually have time to spend with friends old and new. It was also a treat to finally meet Holly Campbell, in person, a very nice lady, and just getting to spend time with these nice people and the many wonderful fans from across Canada, as well as a few fellow Americans. Spoke with some potential new artists, too.

I had intended to run a couple of Beyond the Supernatural™ (BTS) games and a Palladium Fantasy game, but the ambient noise in the gaming hall was so loud (hey, Anime North gets something like 35,000+ people!), I did not think I could hear well enough to run a quality game. The next time we attend Anime North we may try to acquire a quiet space to run games as well as to do panel talks like How to Design Creatures, World Building and The Art of Role-Playing. Not sure if we’ll be back in 2019 or wait a year and return in 2020. Probably the latter, especially since we have so many games and sourcebooks on the drawing board.

StrategiCon GAMEX 2018

The same Memorial Day weekend, Game Master Cameron Cleveland and his crew were running 8 Rifts® RPG events and 2 Robotech® RPG Tactics™ games at StrategiCon in Los Angeles, California. From what we understand, most of those games went great, though it sounds like there was some confusion about RRT events.

Please Note: Just because Palladium Books no longer has the Robotech®/RRT license does not mean gamers who enjoy these games (and others) cannot run them at conventions. It’s just like people who run early editions of D&D or Shadowrun, or Traveller, and so on. That’s the cool thing about games, they do not have an expiration date. They can be played by anyone who owns a copy of it from now till eternity. We always encourage people to play and enjoy our games, and to share their love of the games with others. There is nothing wrong with that, so keep on gaming and have fun. FYI: It has been a long-standing tradition at Palladium Books to plug and describe gaming events that utilize any of our game worlds in our Weekly Updates, provided you give us enough notice (4-8 weeks in advance). We are happy to encourage fun and imagination with the Palladium Megaverse whenever we can. Our thanks to Cameron and his crew of Game Masters for running games at StrategiCon. We understand they have a reputation for quality and fun.

Speaking of which, we know there are a number of Palladium games being run at Origins, coming up fast. And of course, Gen Con.

Ideas for book titles are flowing

The four and a half hour ride up to Anime North and back again, gave Chuck and me time to spitball plenty of ideas and plans for Rifts®, Heroes Unlimited™ and Beyond the Supernatural™. The ideas were flying fast and furious. Subjects included various monsters, magic, super beings, new world settings and environments, ley lines, Rifts and Ley Line Walkers, among other things. Chuck has been sketching away ever since we got back and I’ve been jotting down notes and ideas in between working on the Rifts® Bestiary™, Volume One and Volume Two. I have also been in communication with several freelance artists and writers about projects they are writing and/or contributing to.

Rifts® Bestiary Vol. One and Vol. Two

Chuck has been working on new monster concept drawings, like the one depicted here, all week. And they are looking great. Likewise, I’ve been penning notes and descriptions about some of his beasties as he reveals them to me, as well as working on writing and the coordination of several projects. We have also received some creature stats and ideas from a few other freelancer authors. As noted in the past, we are working on both volumes simultaneously. Very excited about these two books as they develop into something truly special. Below is just one of Charles Walton’s concept sketches that has been approved.

Rifts Bestiary

What are the Rifts® Bestiary of North America, Volumes One and Two?

We are collecting the hundreds of monsters and beasts of Rifts Earth into easy to use reference books, similar to what we did with D-Bees of North America. Only there are so many wondrous and fierce creatures we cannot squeeze them into one book – plus we are adding a bunch of new creatures to add more fun and menace to your Rifts® games. Some will be a nuisance, others pets and companions, some are suitable M.D.C. riding animals, and some are slobbering beasts.

The first two Rifts® Bestiary™ sourcebooks are being created simultaneously, right now! Between them, these two volumes compile all the beasts of Rifts North America (unintelligent monsters, predators, notable animals and intelligent beings that are monstrous or animal-like in appearance or behavior) from all current World Books and Sourcebooks. In addition to a growing number of brand new critters and monsters by Kevin Siembieda, Chuck Walton, Carl Gleba, Greg Diaczyk and others! All adding new life to the savage wilderness of Rifts North America (US, Canada, Mexico). Presented in alphabetical order, with maps showing their range and location, in two big books.

  • Monsters and animals of Rifts North America organized in two big, easy to use sourcebooks. Predators, exotic riding animals, beasts of burden, alien horrors, giant insects and more.
  • Updated descriptions and information where applicable.
  • Updated and uniform stat blocks.
  • A good number of brand new creatures are being added too.
  • A map for every creature showing where it is found.
  • Fully illustrated, much of the art by Charles Walton II, along with Siembieda and many others.
  • 192-224 pages each volume – $26.99 retail – Cat. No. 896 (Volume One) and Cat. No. 897 (Volume Two). In production. Release date: Summer – i.e., as fast as we can kick these bad boys out!

The Rifter®

Wayne Smith is working on selecting material for The Rifter® #80 and #81, with an eye open for additional articles and adventures for the issues that will quickly follow as we get caught up. Some of the upcoming issues of The Rifter® will include articles and adventure source material by Greg Diaczyk, Julius Rosenstein, Mark Oberle and me, Kevin Siembieda.

Writers and Gamers Note: Palladium has several issues of The Rifter® to get caught up with so the next two months are an excellent time to submit gaming articles, adventures, monsters, new characters/O.C.C.s and other source material for possible publication in The Rifter®. Artwork too! Please send electronic files and the Unsolicited Manuscript Form to: riftersub{at}palladiumbooks.com

Of course, all such submissions are created entirely on speculation and there is no promise we will publish your submission in The Rifter®, but this is a great time to be seen. And remember, many writers and artists who started out in The Rifter® went on to work on official sourcebooks. This is a great way to share your ideas and adventures with other gamers.

Splicers®: I am Legion, Adventure Sourcebook

Wayne is also working on putting together the Splicers® I am Legion, Adventure Sourcebook, to be available as a PDF book on DriveThruRPG.com and maybe even as a print on demand title.

New on DriveThruRPG.com – Library of Bletherad for the Palladium Fantasy RPG® and The Rifter® #76 – available now

New and available now: Library of Bletherad™, an epic Palladium Fantasy sourcebook containing 21 Rune Weapons, 50+ new spells, Shadowcasting™ Magic, Fulmination Magic, ancient ruins, forgotten history, hidden secrets, the Monks of Bletherad™, The Zealotry and more! The Rifter® #76 offers Elemental Primorda™, suitable for use in Rifts®, Phase World® and the Fantasy RPG, the Rifts® Pecos Badlands town of Gohjjunk™, Doc Feral™ and some Mutants for Heroes Unlimited™, a Ninjas & Superspies™ adventure, a Savage Rifts® preview, and Splicers®: I am Legion™: Part 5.

One game system – every genre – countless worlds – endless adventure

It is the Memorial Day Weekend here in the USA, so I’m going to keep this Update very short. I don’t usually go anywhere for Memorial Day unless it is Anime North every few years. Well, that’s where you will find me, Charles Walton II (artist), Apollo Okamura (artist), Greg Diaczyk (writer), Kent Burles (artist), and maybe a few other Palladium creators. We hope you come over to our booth to say hello and hang.

This same Memorial Day weekend, Game Master Cameron Cleveland has orchestrated 8 Rifts® RPG events and 2 Robotech® RPG Tactics™ games at StrategiCon in Los Angeles, California. If you are attending, check ‘em out. Cameron and his crew of Game Masters are excellent at running games.

Otherwise, Wayne is working on The Rifter® #80 and #81, while I and others are working on the Rifts® Bestiary Vol. One and Vol. Two, and looking ahead at titles in the schedule.

One game system – every genre – countless worlds – endless adventure

Man, oh man, have we been busy. Besides recovering from the Palladium Open House (it seems like the older we get, the longer it takes to fully recover), dealing with a number of business matters, convention prep, and reaching out to Palladium creators, we have been putting the final wraps on RRT/Robotech® and figuring out where we go from here.

The obvious answer is diving back into what we know best: creating RPGs and sourcebooks that will knock your socks off. We have high hopes and many exciting ideas that I will share with you in upcoming Updates. At the moment, I’m making a list of all titles and plans already in the pipeline and assessing the best order of releases. We want to start a nice flow of releases.

I can tell you that getting the two Rifts® Bestiary titles done and getting caught up on The Rifter® are among our top priorities. You can also look forward to some Raw Preview Editions as well as a couple of PDF only titles on DriveThruRPG coming soon. Folks seem to enjoy the Raw Previews and we have gotten a number of requests for them at the Palladium Open House (POH) as well as before the POH and after. There is a lot of good stuff in the pipeline, so if you want ‘em as Raw Previews, we’ll make them available.

As for the 2018 Palladium Open House (POH), I’ve heard from a number of attendees and freelancers, and all report having a great time. Awesome. Us too. The POH is always a lot of fun and laughter. There were a few snags, and the prep for it was the most last-minute of any POH ever. Heck, we were shipping RRT Reward Exchanges right up to the morning of VIP Thursday! But it all came together thanks to the Herculean efforts of Kathy Simmons and helpers like Matthew Treml, the Brown Family, Tina, Joe, Doug and others. I tried to thank everyone in the last update.

2021 Open House – Palladium’s 40th Anniversary Bash

Assuming we are all around to host it, the next POH will be three years from now – April 2021 – to celebrate Palladium’s 40th Anniversary. Don’t tell us we didn’t give you enough advance notice on this one. And we plan to make it the biggest, most organized and fun Palladium Open House ever. So start making your plans. That includes our wonderful Game Masters, writers, artists, helpers and friends. Together, let’s make this the most fun and memorable blowout ever! You can thank Joe Bergmans for this POH and pointing out that a 40th anniversary event would be perfect. We agree.

More books coming for Rifts® for Savage Worlds®

I don’t know the intended release date (I suspect late 2018 or more likely early 2019), but Pinnacle Entertainment has sent me the next book in the series and some artwork to review for approval. And I get the impression there will be more to come. I’ve given it a quick glance over and it looks pretty good. I expect to give it a thorough read over this weekend.

Rifts®, Dead Reign® and plans for other books ...

We are as hungry to see new book releases as you are. And we plan to dive right into them. Wayne and I will be working on The Rifter® #80 and other issues to come out in rapid succession. I will also be working on the Rifts® Bestiary Vol. One & Two, as well as figuring out the exact order of new releases and getting artists working on new books.

New Raw Preview Editions of books coming soon

A number of people at the Palladium Open House asked that we release more Raw Preview Editions. These are the unedited, “raw” manuscripts before rewrites and additional material is added to the book. There is no artwork, just the untouched manuscript text. Raw Editions are usually limited to 120 or 150 advance copies and fans love them. Since so many people have been inquiring, I will see about releasing 2-4 soon.

One game system – every genre – countless worlds – endless adventure

A lot is going on. Before I forget, let me mention that Charles Walton II (artist), Apollo Okamura (artist), Greg Diaczyk (writer), Kent Burles (artist), and myself, and maybe a few other Palladium creators, will be at Anime North in Toronto, Canada next weekend (Memorial Day weekend in the US). Likewise, Game Master Cameron Cleveland has orchestrated 10 big events at StrategiCon in Los Angeles, California, also Memorial Day weekend.

At Palladium we are putting into place our plans to fast track a number of upcoming new Rifts®, Palladium Fantasy RPG®, and Dead Reign® sourcebooks, as well as new projects to follow. That involves a lot of coordination, assessment and scheduling. We have something like 14 books, plus The Rifter®, in the pipeline and several others in development for the future. These planning sessions include new approaches and methods of hitting release schedules, and a number of projects that we think will surprise and delight our fans.

Writer Matthew Clements returns to Palladium

We are in talks with writer Matthew Clements (Rifts® Northern Gun 1 & 2, among other titles) to bring him back to write new books and help us get out the books in the pipeline.

In addition, Taylor White recently turned in a Chaos Earth® manuscript, and we are having a real-life first responder and writer take a look at Chaos Earth® First Responders for feedback and additions to this long awaited book. Meanwhile, writers Glen Evans, Carl Gleba, Steve Dawes, Greg Diaczyk and others are busy plotting their next project or two.

PDF only titles – coming soon

The collected Splicers®: I am Legion Mega-Adventure Sourcebook and Champions of Palladium: The Lopanic Games (tentative title; for the Palladium Fantasy RPG®) are likely to be the first two PDF books released by Palladium via DriveThruRPG. The Lopanic Games by Paul Herbert will make a nice companion to Glen Evans’ upcoming Lopan sourcebook. A couple other DriveThru projects are also in the works.

Back in Stock Reminder

The following titles are back in stock and available now.

The Rifter® #80

Getting caught up on issues of The Rifter® is a top priority. Both The Rifter® #80 and #81 are in the works. Nick Bradshaw cover for one.

UPDATE: Rifts® Bestiary: North America, Vol. One and Two

The Rifts® Bestiary™ Volume 1 and Volume 2 are the next two books. Probably summer releases. Both books gather and format the existing beasts from the current World Books and Sourcebooks, PLUS a good number of fun, new creatures and monsters to spice up your games, plus maps and more.

UPDATE: Dead Reign®: In the Face of Death

I am looking forward to this sourcebook about life and survival in the big cities during the Zombie Apocalypse. Rooftop living and more.

One game system – every genre – countless worlds – endless adventure

The Palladium Open House was last weekend and it was nothing short of great. More on it below, but before I dive into the Open House, let me mention a number of other things.

Robotech® RPG Tactics – draws to an end

The Robotech® RPG Tactics™ (RRT) Reward Exchange Program is coming to an end this month and cannot be extended.

If we are waiting for a response from you or payment for shipping your rewards, PLEASE do so NOW before it is too late and we can no longer offer you this Exchange. Please. Time is almost out. Palladium will have no remaining inventory after the end of April and it finalizes the Reward Exchange offer. Afterward, any remaining product must be sold to a professional liquidator for pennies on the dollar or destroyed. An end of an era.

An IMPORTANT NOTE for RRT Backers who wish to participate in the Reward Exchange: April 28, 2018 is the final deadline. Also note, a handful of people have recently contacted us reporting they have not gotten a response from us. When we investigate, we find we have sent them numerous messages via Kickstarter Message. In some cases, we have sent the individual 10 or more messages/inquiries via KS messenger. This is your best way to communicate with us. If you have not heard from Palladium and have not checked your Kickstarter Messages in the last week or longer, PLEASE do so pronto! If you are having issues with Kickstarter Messages, you need to let us know and provide an alternative method of communication (email address). And please do so soon. Thank you.

Rifts®, Dead Reign® and plans for other books ...

We are as hungry to see new book releases as you are. And we plan to dive right into them. Wayne and I will be working on The Rifter® #80 and other issues to come out in rapid succession. Four New T-shirts – Available now

Every time we do an Open House we like to have some new products. This year we debuted 4 new T-shirts.

  • New Game Master T-shirt features the dynamic artwork of Kevin Long’s original Villains Unlimited cover. Why this art? A) Because G.M.s unleash the villains and challenges that await their players. B) Heroes Unlimited™ needs some loving. And C), because it is a dynamic piece of art that screams get ready for adventure.
  • 2018 Palladium Books® Open House T-shirt is fun and one of my favorites, featuring art by Ramon K. Perez. You did not have to be at the Open House in person to get this fun T-shirt. If you were there in spirit or just like the design, snap it up. Limited to 120 shirts. Available only while supplies last.
  • Heroes Unlimited™ T-shirt! You have been asking to see more for Heroes Unlimited™, we heard you and offer this striking T-shirt as just the beginning of more support for Heroes Unlimited™. It was certainly a hit at the Palladium Open House.
  • New Rifts® T-shirt! We kept this new Rifts® T-shirt simple and dynamic featuring a CS soldier firing his gun. Is he friend or foe? You decide. It fits the current Rifts® story arc with the Minion War and most any theme involving Rifts and the Coalition States. Art by comic book artist Freddie Williams III. Enjoy.
  • All T-shirts are high quality, pre-shrunk, 100% cotton Gildan T-shirts and look great. I love all four. Wore the POH, G.M. and Heroes Unlimited T-shirts during the event and I’m wearing the Rifts® shirt for inspiration as I write this.
  • Available in most sizes, Medium to 5XL, as usual.
  • $18.95 each for Medium to XL, $20.95 for XXL, and up for larger sizes.
